Now that the Yearmixes have all been published I want to try shorter sets, i.e. between 75 and 90 minutes in length, on Helioscope. Astronics is first and I thought not stretching the beats-heavy mixes to full two hours might do plenty when it comes to flow and listenability. I start off real slow this time, from 85 BPM on “Brutal God”, and build it up to 126 BPM on “Nekyia”. As usual for Astronics, the theme is classic progressive trance with lots of atmosphere, futuristic vibes and driving basslines. Track selection wise there’s not much new here, since the usual suspects like Paul Kardos, Gai Barone, Matter and Guy J are in the spotlight again. A pick I’m most excited about comes right from the WBU track pool and sits right at the end changing the tone to something more euphoric and brighter.

Although this new year looks promising with a new Hospital compilation and a Calibre LP around the corner, I’ll use the start-of-year gap in releases to go on hiatus with Distant – this Yearmix being the final set for now. The time I am able to commit to producing sets is getting shorter every year, so I’ll focus on a regular output for Planetarium and Helioscope instead.

The sea arch is Helioscope’s gateway to 2019: With the first mix of my eighth year of producing sets, I introduce newcomers Kin Leonn, Innesti and Kenji Kihara to the Planetarium roster. Coastal ambient is the major theme here, an aural soundscape constructed from reverb-heavy guitars, piano melodies that make you float and sunny drones. Endless Melancholy, Hirotaka Shirotsubaki, Steven Kemner and Umber are thrown into the mix to bridge the cold northern hemisphere winter with these 90 minutes of warm and lush vibes.
