Basalt

Geophon is the new series for all things post-rock, folk and acoustic. Its main themes are heavier, earthy vibes and a sense of travelling, going on long journeys. “Basalt” brings in several newcomers to the Planetarium roster: Kazakh-British violinist Galya Bisengalieva, Finnish post-rock duo The Gentleman Losers, experienced multi-instrumentalist Tara Jane O’Neil hailing from the US, cinematic ambient producer Ô Lake from France, Montreal-based soundtrack composer Max LL and acoustic guitar artist Tristan Welch from the US.

Botanik goes back to the roots of Planetarium’s earlier piano-only series Chiavi Nere and provides the fifth annual tribute to the Piano Day on March 29 (the 88th day of the year). Accompanying three pieces by the curator Nils Frahm himself are new additions to the Planetarium roster Peter Sandberg and Jeff Mercel who are both more on the orchestral and euphoric spectrum of this set. This channel’s staples like Ludvig Cimbrelius, Ólafur Arnalds, Luis Miehlich and Slow Meadow are also appearing with their piano pieces from the past 12 months that I’ve been waiting to play for quite some time. This set, “Narzisse” (narcissus), collects some of the most beautiful compositions of recent weeks – focussing mostly on piano – and rings in the spring season for Planetarium.

Waves crashing at Planetarium bay: The likes of Kenji Kihara, Ryosuke Miyata and Olan Mill are at the forefront of this set with their maritime ambient style. They’re joined by ILUITEQ, Poemme and newcomer Filalete who present the brighter and airy tracks. Ian Nyquist closes this mix – extended from the 1-hour FRISKY broadcast – with a stunning double feature from his latest album on eilean which will certainly be spearheading this year’s “best of”.

“Flume” (water channel) is the English translation of the title of a new Planetarium curated 90-minute set that makes forest scapes almost tangible. With water rivulets surrounding you in your aural environment, this is as close to nature ambient as it can get. The compilation featuring the mavens of modern classical and electic sound feasts is very grounded, soft like moss, but still captures an atmosphere that feels ethereal.
