It’s been a year since my ambient music neighbour Michael McGarrity appeared on Planetarium and FRISKY CHILL’s Neptunian with his guest mix. We decided a follow-up is long overdue, so he came up with an exciting new format: Sending the mix back and forth between each other after each track (technically, sometimes two). This new form of collaborative set is what I now labelled Interplanetar. This exquisite first edition was first aired on Michael’s FRISKY CHILL show Wander earlier this month. We both added a few more tracks at the end to extend it to around 75 minutes and “Klippenpfade” (cliff paths), exploring both classics and 2021 releases at the same time, is the result.

Geophon is the new series for all things post-rock, folk and acoustic. Its main themes are heavier, earthy vibes and a sense of travelling, going on long journeys. “Basalt” brings in several newcomers to the Planetarium roster: Kazakh-British violinist Galya Bisengalieva, Finnish post-rock duo The Gentleman Losers, experienced multi-instrumentalist Tara Jane O’Neil hailing from the US, cinematic ambient producer Ô Lake from France, Montreal-based soundtrack composer Max LL and acoustic guitar artist Tristan Welch from the US.

“No man’s land”, a term usually reserved for unhabitable places, does not make this cover art justice. In reality, the Zhangjiajie National park is one of the most exciting attractions in all of China. The pillar-like rock formations have this very unique look and inspired the movie Avatar. I had this image by Joshua Sortino as my desktop background for a long time now and decided to dedicate Planetarium’s final (regular) episode of 2018 to it.
Niemandsland encompasses a wide range of styles of ambient music, but the two complementary opening tracks by Loscil, Aaron Martin, Dag Rosenqvist and the amazing acoustic guitar by Seabuckthorn on both set the tone really well. Later in the set, bold and full tracks by offthesky, vau, Yui Onodera, AngusMacRae and InsaDonjaKai are supported by the calmer sounds courtesy of Chihei Hatakeyama, Cheekbone, Anthéne, William Basinki and Lawrence English. As the penultimate track, I chose quite a rhythmic track for a change of pace in the archives of Planetarium.
