Once again, I am very pleased to showcase an extended selection of my favourites from the past year. With this first retrospective on 2021, I am also celebrating the 350th mix release on Planetarium!
However, this year there will be four sets in total with the first two sets covering the amazing releases published up until the end of June 2021, because there simply is and was too much to catch up to. My new discoveries up to here include Arooj Aftab, Tomasz Mreńca, Lamasz, James McAlister and The Broken Cradle. With 15 out of 25 tracks being first-time plays (premieres), this set hopefully justifies the long wait since the last Planetarium release.
This first part also contains no tracks that I have used for Neptunian, so I decided to also use an excerpt from this set as the January 2022 edition for FRISKY Radio.

The second part will be available in limited release next week.
The third and fourth retrospective will cover the second half of 2021, but will probably only see the light of day around July 2022.

As is tradition since 2012, Planetarium’s favourite picks of the last 12 months appear together in a compilation consisting of two extra-length mixes. This past year was particularly challenging to catch up to: The pandemic made plenty of artists spend much more time in their studios and Bandcamp, the primary platform to purchase ambient music from, introduced their fee-slashing fridays. At the moment, my inbox still has about 2500 unread notification mails about new releases sent since August 2020, mostly from labels and artists that I’m not following that closely (I try to cover my favourite labels and artists sooner in a “fast-lane” manner). Chances are high that I’ll come across some more obscure picks in the coming months (follow #PlanetariumRecommends on Twitter!). In any case, Planetarium has seen yet another healthy increase in followers and I’m happy that you keep listening to my mixes. Special thanks goes out to the Select subscribers who are eager to check out limited releases weeks in advance! Off to another, hopefully less depressing year at some point!

It’s yearmix time! This year I collected 87 tracks in total which I deem noteworthy for a year-end retrospective. However, in order to prevent the mixes from having a 5-hour-plus runtime the two main “Best of Planetarium 2019” mixes will be roughly 2 hours or 20 tracks in length. The hardcore fans (Select subscribers) will have the option to listen to all 87 tracks in one single mix to be released in February.
