It’s been a year since my ambient music neighbour Michael McGarrity appeared on Planetarium and FRISKY CHILL’s Neptunian with his guest mix. We decided a follow-up is long overdue, so he came up with an exciting new format: Sending the mix back and forth between each other after each track (technically, sometimes two). This new form of collaborative set is what I now labelled Interplanetar. This exquisite first edition was first aired on Michael’s FRISKY CHILL show Wander earlier this month. We both added a few more tracks at the end to extend it to around 75 minutes and “Klippenpfade” (cliff paths), exploring both classics and 2021 releases at the same time, is the result.

Best of Planetarium 2020, Pt. 1

As is tradition since 2012, Planetarium’s favourite picks of the last 12 months appear together in a compilation consisting of two extra-length mixes. This past year was particularly challenging to catch up to: The pandemic made plenty of artists spend much more time in their studios and Bandcamp, the primary platform to purchase ambient music from, introduced their fee-slashing fridays. At the moment, my inbox still has about 2500 unread notification mails about new releases sent since August 2020, mostly from labels and artists that I’m not following that closely (I try to cover my favourite labels and artists sooner in a “fast-lane” manner). Chances are high that I’ll come across some more obscure picks in the coming months (follow #PlanetariumRecommends on Twitter!). In any case, Planetarium has seen yet another healthy increase in followers and I’m happy that you keep listening to my mixes. Special thanks goes out to the Select subscribers who are eager to check out limited releases weeks in advance! Off to another, hopefully less depressing year at some point!

For 2020, I planned to invite more guests to my regular shows than usual. A perfect opportunity just happened, as I was approached by my Mixcloud neighbour Calm Pills aka Alaeddin Khalik. His mixes appeared on FRISKY under his DJ Seroton moniker. However, the Calm Pills series on Mixcloud is a new, a bit slower, but still very harmonious direction. I think his 25th set which he submitted as my FRISKY entry for February is stunning and captures the Planetarium vibe very well.
