One year after part 2 of the retrospective on 2021 was released, I have an extra set for you covering the second half of 2021 and underseen gems. Catching up on the recent stuff has been difficult, so please be patient. It might not happen anytime soon, but from what I’ve heard so far, 2022 was just as amazing. Hochsee, Pt. 1

After a hiatus during the second half of February, Planetarium is back in a slightly changed format: Since there’s (1) so much good ambient music out there and (2) my professional life requires my attention even more than in previous years, I decided to scrap the limit of twenty-ish tracks for one mix and instead tell a story of multiple chapters. For the first Neptunian story called “Hochsee” (high seas) I selected 66 tracks in total which fit the maritime theme well and split them into four chapters of equal length. Each part is its separate mix, but all are selected and arranged on the same day or weekend and listening to all chapters back to back as soon as they are released will definitely be the best listening experience. This first part is available to everyone from day 1 and a new part will be available in limited (Select) release every subsequent week. Wide release dates will be determined soon, but I plan to do more stories in this format for other series (Nox, Geophon, Jovian, Lumen) and I may use this release pattern for them as well.
I hope you’ll like this and you can rest assured that the quality of the selection is not deteriorating, I just need to finally play the hundreds of tracks in my library.

As is tradition since 2012, Planetarium’s favourite picks of the last 12 months appear together in a compilation consisting of two extra-length mixes. This past year was particularly challenging to catch up to: The pandemic made plenty of artists spend much more time in their studios and Bandcamp, the primary platform to purchase ambient music from, introduced their fee-slashing fridays. At the moment, my inbox still has about 2500 unread notification mails about new releases sent since August 2020, mostly from labels and artists that I’m not following that closely (I try to cover my favourite labels and artists sooner in a “fast-lane” manner). Chances are high that I’ll come across some more obscure picks in the coming months (follow #PlanetariumRecommends on Twitter!). In any case, Planetarium has seen yet another healthy increase in followers and I’m happy that you keep listening to my mixes. Special thanks goes out to the Select subscribers who are eager to check out limited releases weeks in advance! Off to another, hopefully less depressing year at some point!
